Thiruvananthapuram: The first software development block inaugurated on the new campus of IT major Infosys Technologies here on Thursday boasts a range of energy-efficient, environment-friendly features.

Located in the Technopark Special Economic Zone, the new campus is spread over 50 acres and will be developed over a period of five years in a phased manner. Built at a cost of Rs.180 crore, the first Software Development Block has the capacity to accommodate 1,600 employees. It is equipped with a food court, recreational facilities for employees, chiller building, diesel generation block, water storage and treatment facility, sewage treatment plant and well laid-out roads.

A 1,800-seater Software Development Block is under construction on the campus.

Infosys started its operations in Thiruvananthapuram in January 2004. Over 1,500 IT professionals are employed on the leased premises of the company in the Bhavani and Thejaswini buildings at Technopark (STP).

The two Infosys' campuses in the city exported business worth Rs.427.79 crore and contributed 18 per cent to Kerala's exports in the financial year 2009—2010, a press note by the company said.

Senior vice-president Ramadas Kamath said the building housing the first software development centre on the new campus had been awarded the Platinum LEEDS certificate by the Indian Green Building Congress.

He said the building utilised only three watts of energy per sq. ft.

Mr. Kamath said the largest car parking lot in Kerala would come up on the campus. The company is investing Rs.190 crore in developing the parking lot.
