KTDC's convention centre getting ready at Kovalam

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: An international convention centre will be inaugurated at Hotel Samudra of the Kerala Tourism Development Corporation Hotels and Resorts at Kovalam on March 1.
The two-storey centre with modern facilities, which can seat 1,000 people, has come up at a cost of Rs.4 crore on land owned by the corporation between the Institute of Hotel Management and Catering Technology and the entrance to the hotel. The Union Ministry of Tourism has extended financial assistance for the project.
Work on the centre will be completed this week, KTDC Chairman Cherian Philip said. The ground floor has been set apart for dining. An adjacent plot measuring 40 cents (0.16 hectare) procured from the Trivandrum Development Authority will be utilised as a parking lot.
The corporation had decided to name the convention centre after Goda Varma Raja to commemorate the birth centenary of its first chairman. Popularly known as G.V. Raja, he was instrumental in winning a name for Kerala on the world tourism map and in popularising Kovalam and Thekkady.
Mr. Philip said the corporation had renovated the 64 rooms of the hotel, along with the construction of the convention centre. The rooms had been provided new toilets. The hotel lobby had been refurbished and a lift installed.
The convention centre will give a fillip to MICE (meetings, incentive, convention and exhibitions) tourism in the State capital. It is the second convention centre of the corporation in the district. The first is at Hotel Mascot. In Kovalam, this is the second convention centre after the one constructed by the India Tourism Development Corporation near the Grove beach, which is now with a private hotel group.
The corporation is hoping to cash in on the high demand for MICE tourism as Kovalam is a favourite place of multinational companies and others to host international conferences and meetings.
